Match Report: From the Irish Times (Thanks to Steve Bell for Report and Shelbourne team etc)

"Shelbourne's third meeting with Leeds in eighteen months at Tolka Park last night, proved every bit as attractive and entertaining as the previous two. An estimated 12,000 spectators saw Leeds play on occasion to their fluid best and Shelbourne's contribution to a fine, footballing encounter said much for Pat Byrne's approach to the game."

"Stroking the ball around attractively, Leeds' cocky start was rewarded with goals inside twelve minutes. Bobby Davison converted Mel Sterland's centre with a delicate glancing header and then he cut in from the by-line to set up Neil Doherty."

"The home side responded well to this double blow as Liam Brady began to make his creativity tell. On twenty-nine minutes his inch perfect free saw Mark Gill just wide with a glancing header and a minute later, Brady and Anto Whelan combined for Padraig Dully to skilfully fool John McClelland in reaching the by-line and pull the ball back for the hugely impressive Greg Costello to score"

"Brady did little else but pass but his passing is still worth travelling a long distance to behold. However, Shelbourne were unlucky with some marginal offside decisions against them and at the other end Davison beat their offside trap to again set up Doherty for a 3-1 interval lead."

"The move of the match, involving Costello, Brady, Dermot Judge and Peter Coyle, after sixty-four minutes, ended with Judge shooting against the bar. The outstanding moment of individual skill saw David Batty arrogantly tee the ball up with his chest and knee before volleying against the bar, while Dylan Kerr sent a searing drive marginally over. All-in-all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening and again a credit to Shelbourne."
